Art Inspirations From Mexico April 18, 2012

With each class, I focus on the art of another culture. With 3rd grade, we learn about art from Mexico. we start by learning about the Aztecs and the Mayans. Last we learn about the Mexican “cowboys” and the textile art. On one large construction paper sheet we draw a sombrero and a poncho on another. We paint each item, then we spend a class period embellishing our pieces before cutting them out. The 3rd grade had a blast!

When they were done we cut the pieces out. The kids had so much fun and so did I. Here are the 3rd graders with their finished artwork.

This lesson was found on Mr. E’s site. Thanks for the great lesson!

3rd grade students are drawing an optical illusion from lines and shading. With simple steps each 3rd grade student was able to create “tubes” or “tornadoes”.
1. Draw a horizontal wavy line.
2. Draw 7 dots along the line.
3. Connect the dots with hills on both the top and bottom of the original line.
4. Continue drawing hills over each preceding hill until you get to the end of the paper.

I demonstrated gradation of value and had each student practice on a scratch paper. I focused on having them press more firmly in the corners of the tube and gradually easing up on their pressure as the moved to the center of each tube. I allowed them to choose 4-5 colors that look nice together. We spend so much time on color families on other projects, I thought they would like to just pick colors they like. We have not gotten very far, but they are looking good!

3rd grade students just finished some Autumn Tree Paintings. I had 3rd graders collect and bring in leaves that have fallen in the last few weeks.

We discussed the cycle of a tree over the year and the traditional colors we see in nature this time of year. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, and Brown.  3rd graders first drew the structure of a tree the way it looks in winter with no leaves. Next, we painted.

3rd grade students are working on a color weaving project. We talked about 2 color families called warm and cool. We made paintings for each family. When the paintings were dry, we cut and began weaving our pictures together. The result is really quite stunning!
