6th grade students have been learning about gradation of value and the artist MC Escher. In order to practice their shading skills and make things look 3D, as the 6th graders say, they drew a variety of small objects at large scale including shadows and highlights. The final shading example was to draw popcorn on black paper with white pencil. The 6th graders soon realized, they had to draw backwards!!!
Once their shaded images were finished, students were instructed to use their imagination, look at the popcorn drawings and try to find images within. Similar to looking at clouds.
We had everything from turtles to camels!
Here are some students working on their popcorn creations.
